As Ghana approaches its 2024 general elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated the country’s dedication to conducting fr.ee and transparent elections.
Speaking at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he highlighted Ghana’s strong democratic values and its reputation as a leader in governance across Africa.
The President assured the international community that the Electoral Commission, alongside Ghana’s security services, is prepared to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
He noted that Ghanaians have consistently demonstrated their commitment to democracy, which has been a defining characteristic of the nation since it transitioned to a multi-party system in 1992.
The upcoming elections will mark a significant moment, as it will be the first time in 16 years without an incumbent president on the ballot, raising the stakes for both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In light of recent political turmoil in several West African countries, President Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of nurturing democratic principles.
His confidence in the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions aims to reassure citizens and observers alike that the electoral process will reflect the true will of the people, thereby reinforcing Ghana’s status as a stable democracy in a region facing increasing challenges.
