Ahiagbah urges gov’t to act on Ketu South coastal crisis

Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the government to support residents of Agavedzi and Amutinu in Ketu South, where severe coastal erosion has displaced many.

In a post on X, he described the dire conditions in the affected communities, saying, “The government has to aid residents of Agavedzi and Amutinu, whose houses have been eroded by the violent sea.”

Mr. Ahiagbah noted that some residents displaced by the rising waters have resorted to sleeping at a newly built automated premix fuel station nearby. He also indicated that the Member of Parliament for the area, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, visited the community on February 3 but had not taken further action since then.

“I think the government has to intervene to help the people. Needless to say, this is Ketu South, the supposed ‘World Bank’ and the home of the General Secretary of the NDC, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey,” he wrote.

Mr. Ahiagbah further claimed that political considerations were preventing some residents from seeking assistance. “I see a crisis far more significant here than we have seen recently. However, the people are unwilling to cry for help because they fear it will make their party, the NDC, unpopular,” he stated.

He also criticized the local Assemblyman, Ebenezer Assah, for remaining silent on the issue, despite having previously spoken out on similar matters during the former NPP administration..

Coastal erosion has long been a challenge in parts of the Volta Region, with calls for long-term solutions such as seawalls and resettlement plans to protect affected communities.
