The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is gearing up to officially kick off this year’s Green Ghana Day in Tamale on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The event, hosted at the University for Development Studies (UDS) multipurpose Auditorium, will have the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, as special guest.

Green Ghana Day, introduced in 2021 by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, forms a crucial part of the national afforestation / reforestation program aimed at restoring Ghana’s lost forest cover and contributing to global climate change mitigation efforts.

The initiative aims to raise national awareness about the urgent need for collective action to restore degraded landscapes, instill the importance of tree planting and nurturing, mitigate climate change, engage rural communities in tree seedling production, and enhance the beauty of communities and the environment.

Initially targeting five million trees in 2021, the program exceeded expectations by planting over seven million seedlings.

By June 2023, Green Ghana Day witnessed the distribution and planting of a staggering 11,530,672 seedlings across the country.

In line with the Green Ghana initiative, the Forestry Commission introduced the “#Let’sGoPlanting” campaign in 2022 and 2023, distributing free tree seedlings throughout the country, encouraging widespread participation in the reforestation efforts.

This year’s commemorative tree planting exercise will operate with the theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” with an ambitious target of planting 10 million tree seedlings nationwide.
