Power outages "Dumsor"

With the recent increase in power outages in Ghana, there are concerns about the return to the dark days of “Dumsor,” a term that became synonymous with power cuts in late 2012, causing disruptions to daily life, businesses, households, and industries.

Currently, some areas are facing prolonged periods without electricity, reminiscent of the challenging “dumsor” era, leading to frustration and fears of a return to severe power rationing.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed these challenges to some distribution transformers operating at full capacity due to increased demand, resulting in blown fuses and broken conductors. It is worth noting that these outages began six weeks before the ECG issued a statement to the public.

In the statement, released on Monday, March 11, 2024, the ECG addressed the situation, stating, “The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited wishes to inform our valued customers and the public that six hundred and thirty (630) distribution transformers in our operational areas are at full capacity due to rising demand. This may lead to outages, particularly during peak load hours (7pm – 11pm) in affected areas.” The ECG has initiated the installation of additional transformers to tackle the issue, the statement added.

Despite the assurance, many Ghanaians remain apprehensive about the impact of the current outages on their daily lives and businesses, given the lingering memories of the past “dumsor” period.

RGG News has reported numerous complaints from citizens regarding the adverse effects on their businesses.

To prevent a potential crisis from escalating, RGG News is urging the government and relevant authorities to maintain transparency and keep the public informed about the progress being made to address the power outages.

We firmly believe that effective communication is essential in fostering trust and confidence among citizens, particularly about such a critical issue as the provision of electricity.

By taking proactive and transparent measures, they can reassure the public and ensure that Ghana maintains a stable and dependable power supply.
