President of Malta on state visit

Ghana and Malta are further building on existing relations and exploring other levels of cooperation for mutual benefit. President Akufo-Addo and his counterpart from Malta, George William Vella are of the same opinion to improve on the current volumes of about 4-million dollars, mutual support, migration, reform of the UN Security Council and upping political consultation. The two leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on trade, investment, security, Education, migration, Tourism and minimise Climate Change impact, while supporting each other at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Its been five decades of diplomatic relations between Ghana and Malta. However, relations between Accra and Valletta in recent times have enjoyed a significant improvement with high profile visits to Ghana and Malta. In 2017, the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was in Ghana to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance economic cooperation between the two nations. President Akufo-Addo also visited Malta to build on the growing ties. In 2014, Ghana established her first mission in Valletta to strengthen bilateral relations.

The government of Malta also in 2019 reciprocated this gesture and established its mission in Accra to serve Sub Saharan Africa. The two day state visit by President George William Vella, is seen as another boost for the renewed diplomatic and bilateral relationship between Ghana and Malta. Ghana is seen as a peaceful and stable gateway by Malta to build strong bilateral relations with Africa. Ghana and Malta have an existing Joint Commission to oversee progress of the agreement between the two countries.

President Vella’s visit will improve on cooperation in trade, investment security, Education, migration, deepening of political relations, Tourism, Climate Change, Youth Development, Agriculture, Pharmaceuticals and Exchange programmes. After their closed door discussion the two leaders shared some details with the media. President Akufo-Addo and President Vella also promised to drive trade and investment in both countries. Malta has promised to support Ghana’s Foreign Minister’s pursuit of being elected as Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations. Ghana also promised to support Malta in her attempt into international institutions.
