The Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Sunik Mahama, has justified the action taken by ECG officials to disconnect Parliament from the National Grid while the House was in session due to a GHS23 million outstanding payment.
In an interview on Starr FM, Mr. Mahama stated that ECG officials were simply discharging their duties just like the Members of Parliament.
“Parliament was working and so were ECG officials. It is simple so ask your next question”, he said.
ECG, a few weeks ago began an exercise of retrieving all unpaid bills and consequently disconnecting power of customers who failed to settle their debts or were involved in the illegal usage of power.
Ghana’s law-making chamber was one of a number of institutions heavily hit by ECG’s exercise.
Previously facing a series of power cuts, Parliament was finally disconnected from the national grid by officials from ECG over outstanding payment in the early hours of 28th February.
