Participants from various parts of the world including UN and EU officials, have met in Accra and traded ideas on how to manage international migration for optimum benefit to all. Dubbed ‘The Accra Dialogue’, interest groups highlighted the need for society to focus more on the benefits of migration.
Since creation, mankind has been on the move from one geographical location to another; and it goes on and on. Some people move in search of work or economic opportunities; to join family or to study. Others move to escape conflict, persecution or disasters. According to the United Nations, as of 1st July, 2020, the global number of international migrants was estimated at 281 million. The current figure is said to be three times higher than it was in 1970. The Accra
Dialogue, led by the Centre for Migration Studies at the University of Ghana, looked at rebalancing the views on migration. Speaking about some of the hindrances to migration, the Director of the Centre for Migration Studies, Professor Setrana Boatemaa said some of the ECOWAS protocols have outlived their usefulness and must be scrapped.
