Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro says the newly introduced automated transport ticketing system ‘Tap n’ Go” will not in any way affect their operations.

He said the system will be suitable for taxis and long-distance vehicles because trotros are often for short distances making it impossible for the system to affect their operations.

“Our work is secured, and this new system will not stop us from working because it is for taxis and long-distance vehicles and so we will not be affected.”, he said.

In an interview with RGG News, Abass Imoro stated that, the Vice President’s goal of implementing the tap n’ go system on trotros is unattainable.

He explains further that trotros can get full, drive for about one mile, and then, about half of the passengers will alight from the vehicle. Next, the trotro starts picking passengers one after the other. He says “Are you saying halfway into the journey, if he’s going to pick somebody and the network is not good for about five minutes, a trotro driver will stand by one passenger?

Abass Imoro has also questioned the level of awareness created in getting people to opt for the card system especially as many he says still have funds locked up on their ayalolo card.

“Have we educated our people enough to keep their money on cards? The first system introduced is the Ayololo. So many passengers have their money locked up on those cards, as that system was abandoned halfway,” he further stated.

The Tap n’ Go transport service, according to the government, is a multi-functional digital platform for Ghana’s transport ecosystem designed to provide services in intra and inter-city bus services, trotro, parcel delivery and tracking, loading taxi service, trains and the call on demand uber-like service.
