The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Independent Power Generators, Ghana, IPGG, Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, is concerned about the introduction of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023. He describes it as a political risk that will raise power costs and believes the emissions levy may lead to an upsurge in electricity tariffs.
Dr. Apetorgbor says it is important for a proportional review of electricity generation tariffs to maintain the predictability of cash flow for power producers.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Eureka Energy Solutions, Dr Yussif Sulemana says the introduction of the emission levy may be counter-productive. He is suggesting that the government considers withdrawing the levy while steps are taken to improve upon the collection of existing taxes to improve government’s revenues.
Dr. Sulemana advised government to gradually promote the use of electric vehicles as a measure to control carbon emissions.
