“Why does the GBA remain silent on human rights violations? – John Mahama

Former president John Mahama has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for their alleged partisan stance in defending the rights of Ghanaians. He accuses the GBA of remaining silent on the human rights abuses and violations that occur under the current NPP administration, while being vocal and critical of the NDC administration when it was in power.

Mr. Mahama made these remarks at a town hall meeting with organized labour in the Ashanti region, as part of his campaign tour ahead of the 2024 general election.

“When journalists are oppressed and people’s freedom of expression is affected, it is the responsibility of organized labour and unions to speak out. The GBA talks about perception. Does the GBA go dormant when the NPP is in power and suddenly become active when the NDC comes into play? We will find out in 2025 if you will awaken,” said Mahama.

He challenges the GBA to maintain consistency and impartiality in their advocacy for justice and democracy, regardless of the political party in power.

“You all know that when the NPP is in power, they commit the most outrageous acts and you remain silent. However, when the NDC is in power, even the smallest mistake leads to a press release from the GBA. You know this is true,” he added.

The Building Ghana Tour is a nationwide campaign driven by the former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to engage with Ghanaians and revitalize his party ahead of the 2024 general election.

The tour seeks to provide Ghanaians with renewed hope and reassurance, while reaffirming Mr Mahama’s social contract with the people and prepare the party’s grassroots for the 2024 election.
