Former ECG MD ready to cooperate as probe deepens into missing containers

Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has pledged his full cooperation with any investigative body probing the disappearance of over 1,300 ECG containers at the Tema Port.

His assurance follows widespread public concern over the missing containers, which were meant to support ECG’s operations. An investigative committee set up to examine the issue found that out of 2,491 containers expected to be cleared and distributed, 1,357 are unaccounted for.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show, Mr. Mahama distanced ECG from responsibility, stating that the containers were never in the company’s custody. “If they were in ECG’s custody, then you can hold ECG responsible, but they were still under the port authorities. I am all for whatever investigations there will be and ready to give my side of the story,” he said.

The investigative report uncovered several irregularities in ECG’s procurement and shipping processes:

  • ECG previously had a dedicated fund for clearing shipments, but this was discontinued before 2022 due to financial constraints.
  • The company awarded contracts to two firms to clear the containers, but one lacked the required license, raising procurement concerns.
  • ECG’s procurement directorate had been merged with its Housing and Estate unit.
  • The Director of Procurement had no prior experience in procurement and was not a member of any professional procurement body.

The findings have intensified calls for accountability as authorities investigate how vital equipment meant for ECG’s operations vanished from the port.
