President John Dramani Mahama has returned from a one-day working visit to Abuja, Nigeria, where he held discussions with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The meeting focused on strengthening the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) through enhanced economic integration and cooperation. Both leaders also discussed the need for greater collaboration in tackling terrorism and violent extremism, which pose security threats to the region.
Mr. Mahama expressed his appreciation for President Tinubu’s attendance at his recent inauguration, describing it as a reflection of the strong ties between Ghana and Nigeria.
He also briefed the Nigerian leader, who serves as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, on his recent visit to Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The three Sahelian countries announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS, citing concerns over sovereignty and governance disputes with the regional body.
The discussions come at a time when ECOWAS faces growing challenges in maintaining regional stability and unity following the exit of the three nations.
