The communications director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has donated relief items to the victims of the flooding in Lower Volta.

About 30,000 residents of communities along the lower Volta Basin have been displaced following the spillage of the Akosombo dam by the Volta River Authority.

Flood water levels rose to roof levels in communities within the North Tongu, Central Tongu, and South Tongu Districts in the Volta Region.

The floods further displaced people in North Dayi, South Dayi, Keta, and parts of Anlo district as well.

Mr. Ahiagbah in his capacity presented 55 bags of rice, 15 bags of powdered soap, 10 Boxes of Geisha soap, 20 boxes of noodles, and a few boxes of sanitary towels to help ameliorate the plight of the flood victims.

He commiserated with the leadership of the community and commended them for setting up a Central Relief Administration Committee to coordinate the distribution of the relief items.

“You’re doing a yo man’s job and it’s good you have set up the central relief administration committee, that should help coordinate the distribution of the relief items,” Mr. Ahiagbah told the DCE.

He further charged the local assembly to get involved in the “rebuilding efforts” to ensure proper coordination.

Receiving the items on behalf of the central relief administration committee set up for effective management, DCE for North Tongu, Divine Osborn Fenu told Mr. Ahiagbah that the relief administration process has been saddled with challenges of people seeking to donate directly to the victims without going through the central relief administration committee.

This he said creates difficulties in the fair and even distribution of aid.

Mr. Fenu added that the victims have been warned not to return to their homes in communities where the flood waters have receded until the buildings have been checked for their structural integrity.

“We have warned the victims not to return to their homes. We don’t think it is safe yet until their homes have been fumigated and disinfected and the homes checked for their structural integrity”.

He said there’s a need for a strategic plan to redirect the course of the overflow of the Akosombo Dam into some purposeful ventures like farming. This he hoped will avert any recurrence of this level of flooding.
