The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called for a more comprehensive approach to tackling illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
In a post on X, he emphasized that the fight against galamsey should go beyond brute force, advocating for public education to raise awareness about its dangers.
“It has to be inclusive and integrate public education to appeal to the conscience of all, especially those who are making a living out of devastating our environment and water bodies,” he stated.
Mr. Ahiagbah stressed the need for illegal miners to understand that their activities pose a long-term threat to society, despite the short-term economic benefits they derive.
His remarks come amid ongoing concerns over the environmental impact of illegal mining and efforts by authorities to curb the practice.
