Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has formally apologized to Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, her family, and the chiefs and people of Anlo following a derogatory remark made against her in Parliament.
Addressing MPs on Tuesday, March 4, Mr. Bagbin expressed regret over the incident, which occurred during a heated debate on February 4, marking the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah’s death.
“In light of this incident, I extend my deepest apologies to Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle; Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady of Ghana; the family; the chiefs; and all the good people of Anlo Dukor and Anlo land,” he said.
The controversy erupted when an unidentified MP from the backbench interrupted proceedings with the remark, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” while Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was addressing the House.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Mr. Bagbin stated, “It is troubling when a lawmaker must endure such indignity while serving the nation.”
Beyond the apology, he announced a formal probe to identify the MP responsible, warning that failure to come forward voluntarily would lead to stricter consequences once the individual is found.
