Black Stars miss out on 2025 AFCON after Angola draw

Ghana’s hopes of reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) came to an end on Friday night after a 1-1 draw against Angola at the 11th November Stadium in Luanda. The result confirmed the Black Stars’ elimination from the tournament, marking their first absence since 2004.

The four-time AFCON champions entered the match needing a win to keep their slim qualification hopes alive but could only manage a draw. Jordan Ayew provided a moment of brilliance in the 18th minute, curling in a stunning free kick to give Ghana an early lead.

The Black Stars showed resilience in the first half, with goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen making a crucial penalty save to preserve their advantage.

However, Angola’s persistence paid off in the second half when substitute Zini found the back of the net with a header, capitalizing on poor marking by Ghana’s defense. The equalizer dashed Ghana’s chances, leaving them bottom of Group F with just three points from five matches.

The draw also confirmed Angola’s qualification for the tournament, while Sudan and Niger remain in contention for the other spot in the group. Ghana’s campaign has been marred by a five-game winless streak, including three draws and two losses, with only two goals scored across the qualifiers.

The Black Stars will wrap up their disappointing campaign on Monday against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium. With no chance of qualification, the match holds little significance for Ghana, who will now reflect on a campaign that has fallen far below expectations.

For a team once celebrated as giants of African football, missing the AFCON is a sobering reality and a reminder of the urgent need for a rebuild.
