A new biogas plant, designed to process organic waste into energy, has been commissioned. This facility is part of a partnership between DasBiogas and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to tackle the city’s growing waste issues by converting waste into useful resources, such as cooking gas and fertilizer.

Ali Nuhu Abeka, Deputy Director of Petroleum Downstream at the Ministry of Energy, emphasized that the project aligns with Ghana’s goal of increasing renewable energy usage.

Speaking for the Energy Minister, Mr. Abeka explained how this innovation supports the ministry’s renewable energy strategy, which aims to have at least 10% of the nation’s energy consumption sourced from renewables by 2030.

“This biogas facility is an important milestone in promoting waste-to-energy technologies, providing opportunities for clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” he stated.

The Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Elizabeth Tawiah Sackey, highlighted the city’s waste management challenges, noting that Accra produces over 1,200 metric tonnes of waste daily. She emphasized that the biogas plant supports AMA’s climate action plan by focusing on segregating dry and wet waste.

This approach will help transform traditional waste disposal practices and make waste separation mandatory for homes and businesses.

“We are committed to moving away from old waste disposal methods, and this plant is a step forward in ensuring that organic waste is processed into energy,” the mayor noted.

DasBiogas founder Enoch Kofi Boadu shared the company’s vision to expand biogas technology across the country. He explained that with government backing, this innovation could enable households to turn organic waste into affordable energy.

“We aim to offer households and businesses a sustainable solution that converts waste into clean energy, which could transform how we manage waste nationwide,” Mr. Boadu stated, expressing hope that the project will inspire further adoption of clean energy solutions across Ghana.

This initiative highlights Accra’s efforts to embrace environmentally friendly technologies, offering a sustainable approach to managing waste while advancing renewable energy solutions in Ghana.
