The Minerals Commission has criticized the police for failing to act against illegal mining, or “galamsey,” occurring near the Anyinam Police Station in the Atiwa East District.
Speaking before Parliament’s Government Assurances Committee on October 7, the Commission’s CEO, Martin Ayisi, expressed frustration over the police’s inaction despite repeated reports. He stressed that mining in water bodies remains illegal, yet no arrests have been made.
Mr. Ayisi denied claims of inadequate resources but opposed halting the issuance of mining licenses, warning it could push people towards illegal activities. Chairman Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, however, supports suspending small-scale mining licenses.
