Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, has issued an apology for comparing the achievements of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to those of incumbent President Akufo-Addo. His remarks, made during his introduction as the running mate to NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, sparked controversy.
In his statement, Napo clarified that he never intended to disrespect Dr. Nkrumah or any former Ghanaian head of state. He expressed regret for any discomfort caused by his comments and acknowledged the pivotal role Nkrumah played in Ghana’s history.
“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” he said.
He added, “I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused.”
The controversy arose from Napo’s assertion that no president since Ghana’s independence in 1957 has contributed more to the country’s development than President Nana Akufo-Addo.
