Ahiagbah Challenges NDC’s Stance on Ghana’s Debt Relief Agreement

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, says he’s astonished at the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s position on the government’s successful external debt negotiations.

The NDC stated that the success of the negotiations should not be celebrated, despite the government’s announcement of a significant reduction of US$4.7 billion in Ghana’s external debt. Ahiagbah contrasted this achievement with the NDC’s previous borrowing of $918 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2015, emphasizing that the savings are fivefold greater than the borrowed amount.

In a social media post, Mr. Ahiagbah criticized the NDC for not acknowledging the debt reduction, which includes loans taken during their tenure, as a victory for the nation.

He posted on X “Ghana has saved $4.7 billion of debt, part of which the NDC has borrowed, and they say we should not celebrate it. This is quite perplexing”.

Mr Ahiagbah commended the President, Nana Akufo-Addo for his leadership throughout the negotiation process and highlighted Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam’s role in successfully concluding the negotiations which Ken Ofori Atta, the former Finance Minister, started.
