Today is the 2024 Green Ghana Day, a nationwide initiative focused on enhancing Ghana’s green cover and supporting reforestation and ecological sustainability efforts.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor, announced that the government has allocated 1.5 million cedis for this year’s Green Ghana Day Project, a decrease from the 2.5 million cedis allocated in 2023.

In response to questions at a Ministry of Information media briefing, Mr Jinapor explained that most of the funding is from private sources, with corporate Ghana contributing significantly.

He outlined the government’s past contributions: 2 million cedis each in 2021 and 2022, 2.5 million cedis in 2023, and 1.5 million cedis this year.

This year’s Green Ghana day is with the theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”

The first Green Ghana Day was held on June 11, 2021, with 7 million trees planted. In past years, 26 million trees planted in 2022 and 10 million in 2023.

The Minister for Lands, speaking at the 2024 edition of ‘The One Student, One Tree Initiative’ launch at the Abuakwa State College in Kyebi, Eastern Region, also disclosed that the Forestry Commission will distribute free seedlings at District and Regional offices and other public locations.

This year, the ministry aims to maintain last year’s target of 10 million trees to ensure a high survival rate.

I’m looking forward to participating in the Green Ghana initiative. This is a good initiative and both workers and schools should be actively involved. Churches and mosques should also be involved for a better Ghana.
