In 2012, the United Nations established this day which underscores the intrinsic value of happiness as a fundamental human right and a shared goal for all humanity.

This year’s theme, “Building a Happier World Together,” resonates deeply in the face of ongoing challenges such as climate change, social disparities, and political unrest. It emphasizes the imperative of collective action and solidarity in fostering resilience and positivity on a global scale.

Rooted in the UN’s commitment to holistic development, the International Day of Happiness originated from a resolution recognizing happiness as a key component of inclusive and sustainable progress.

Proposed by the Kingdom of Bhutan, this day was officially designated on June 28, 2012, to be observed annually on March 20th.

Today’s celebrations serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental and emotional well-being alongside material wealth, calling upon individuals, communities, and governments to adopt policies and practices that contribute to greater happiness and fulfillment for all members of society.

Furthermore, this day underscores the interconnectedness of human experiences and the shared responsibility we hold in crafting a happier world. It encourages acts of kindness, compassion and empathy, recognizing that true happiness is not merely an individual pursuit but a collective endeavour.

In an interview with RGGNEWS, Dr. Isaac Newman Arthur, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Psychological Association, emphasized that the International Day of Happiness serves as a reminder that happiness is a fundamental human right.

He highlighted that happiness is interpreted according to cultural, personal, and experiential factors.

Dr. Newman Arthur explained that happiness encompasses mental and emotional states of excitement towards one’s surroundings, manifesting internally and externally.

Referencing Proverbs 17:22, he is emphatic about the medicinal benefits of happiness and the detrimental effects of being sad.

Outlining the numerous advantages of happiness, Dr. Newman Arthur noted its positive impact on mental health, heart health, immune function, stress reduction, longevity and overall well-being.

On the contrary, he associated persistent anger, bitterness, and jealousy with unresolved emotional issues and the absence of happiness.

Dr. Newman Arthur further urged individuals to take responsibility for their own happiness, advising them to seek professional assistance if needed.

He recommended consulting various healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, mental health workers and chaplains, for support.

Offering practical tips for cultivating happiness, Dr. Newman Arthur suggested maintaining a positive outlook, surrounding oneself with positive influences, prioritizing rest, nutrition and exercise, setting realistic expectations, practicing forgiveness and fostering gratitude.
