The Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Dr. Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, says Ghana’s pursuit of economic growth and national development will yield limited outcomes unless women’s development is prioritized. This will enable them to assume leading roles in national initiatives.
She said there should be a deliberate policy framework that could empower women into leadership positions for national development.
“We have women doing well in the corporate world, business space and other sectors. They have ideas that could be harnessed to drive our national development agenda”, she said.
Speaking to RGG News’ Teye Kitcher on Insight, Dr. Dwamena-Aboagye said it is important to create more opportunities for women to take up leadership positions in the country with the view to achieving gender equality.
She contends that the patriarchal norms in Africa, which have historically relegated women to followership roles, must change.
She argues that focusing on women empowerment is the surest way to increase female leadership which would inspire others to follow suit.
“It is evident that when women are empowered it shoots up economic development. Without the understanding that even women’s participation at a certain number will help economic growth will not drive the effort at economic growth and national development”, she said.
