Planned Protest Against Bank of Ghana: Minority Parties Demand Accountability and Change

In the legal battle of injunctions between the Minority in Parliament and the Police regarding their planned demonstration against the Bank of Ghana, it’s easy to lose sight of the reasons behind the protest and its objectives.

Earlier this year, on August 23, the Minority in Parliament, led by Ato Forson, announced their intention to stage a demonstration against the Bank of Ghana, citing what they deemed as mismanagement of the country’s central bank.

They pointed to the Bank of Ghana’s posted loss of Ghs. 60.8 billion, which they characterized as irresponsible.

The political parties involved also called for the suspension of the construction of the central bank’s new head office, which is budgeted at USD 250 million. Their rationale for this demand is rooted in the prevailing economic difficulties facing the country.

Additionally, the protesters are demanding the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank, Ernest Addison, along with his two deputies.

After two postponements, the protest is finally scheduled to take place on October 3, 2023, following the rejection of an injunction application by the police service.

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, expressed the readiness of the protesters, stating, “We have been working on this, and we have been holding community sensitization programs across the Greater Accra Region, and we are ready for the planned protest on Tuesday.”

Mr. Ayariga further conveyed, “We have been well received in all the communities that we have gone to, and they are preparing to participate in the protest. We will continue to protest until the governor and his deputies leave office until we have a clean sheet at the Central Bank so that new leadership can be put in place to spearhead the process of restoring the integrity of the Central Bank.”

“We held meetings with the Regional Police Command and agreed on the route, and the time, and they are ready to be there to provide whatever assistance.” He added.
